A Queer and Pleasant Danger : The true story of a nice Jewish boy who joins the Church of Scientology and leaves twelve years later to become the lovely lady she is today  /

samenvatting: Bornstein (Gender Outlaws) is a former Scientology VIP and, for nearly 40 years, a man named Al. Before age five, Bornstein realized "I wasn't a boy, and therefore must be a girl." In college, he has sex with women, whom he loves, but also goes for men who make him feel like a girl. This tempest of confusions brings him to Denver, where he finds refuge in Scientology, learning that he's a gender-free being called a thetan. "The battle of the sexes raged in my mind, day and night. Can you imagine a more appealing theology for someone like me?" For the next decade, Bornstein is blissfully happy with a wife and daughter, and at one point is outranked by only 50 other people in the entire organization. He writes that in 1982, he was excommunicated from Scientology after discovering some private information about L. Ron Hubbard. On his own, he starts therapy, concludes he's a transsexual, and after living for a year as a woman, changes his name and has reassignment surgery. In the right body, refusing to claim a gender and calling herself a lesbian transsexual, she struggles with rejection from the transsexual, transgender and lesbian communities, but likes the person she is becoming. Bornstein can be a challenging and confusing narrator at times, but is sympathetic in her universal struggle to be comfortable in her own skin and her attempt to come to peace with the paradox that is her life (from Publishers Weekly).

Six Ways of Looking at a Trans Man? : The Life of Frank Shimer (1826-1901)  / Rachel Hope Cleves.

Journal of the History of Sexuality, 27 (2018) 1 (jan), p. 32-62
bron: Journal of the History of Sexuality jaargang: 27 (2018) 1 (jan), p. 32-62
samenvatting: Today is not the first moment of transition. During the nineteenth century, the sex/gender system underwent numerous dramatic shifts that undermine popular assumptions about Victorian rigidity. The biography of Frances "Frank" Ann Wood Shimer (1862-1901), remarkable throgout her life for masculinty, illuminates those shifts and provides an opportunity to trans the category of women, revealing the long history of contestation over its meaning. This essay examines the shifting meanings of femaile masculinty during Shimer's lifetime, drawing attention to gender's historical incoherency in order to situate Shimer's life within trans history. It follows the lead of scholars who have argued that attention to process rather than identity provides the best approach to writing about transgender history avant la lettre.

Calling Self-Indulgence : Names, Pronouns, Poems  / J. de Leon.

TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly, 6 (2019) 4 (nov), p. 620-634
bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 6 (2019) 4 (nov), p. 620-634
samenvatting: Recent works by trans and nonbinary poets, including Oliver Baez Bendorf, Jos Charles, jayy dodd, Joshua Jennifer Espinoza, Paige Lewis, and Danez Smith, gesture to a new mode of trans-confessional poetry. Trans poets practice naming as a form of self-indulgence, and trans names and pronouns are a form of poetry - following Audre Lorde's articulation - read into the world to give it new shape. In trans naming practices and poetry, self-indulgences are also demands made of another, a new name or unexpected pronoun asking for an affirmative repetition, a performative reflection: mirror restaging. Gender, like self-indulgence, is never accomplished alone. It relies on an audience that either affirms and repeats - or refuses - one's request to be seen and understood in a way that breaks from expectation. I closely read two poems, by Oliver Baez Bendorf and Richard Siken, whose shared centering of names articulate a relational self-indulgence in their proposed call-and-response.

Transtocar, Three Fragments  / Cynthia Citlallin Delgado Huitrón.

TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly, 9 (2022) 1 (feb), p. 119-125
bron: TSQ : Transgender Studies Quarterly jaargang: 9 (2022) 1 (feb), p. 119-125
samenvatting: This essay began in a footnote-number 2 - located at the end of a sentence in the penultimate paragraph of the first section of my article "Haptic Tactic: Hyper-tenderness of the [Mexican] State and the Performances of Lia García," published in this very journal (Delgado Huitrón 2019: 167). The article approaches the hypertender touch of transfeminist artist, poet, and pedagogue Lia García (La Novia Sirena) through a close analysis of a performance event entitled "Quinceañera," part of her larger performative project Proyecto 10Bis (2016-17). In the article I propose using the anglophone composite to transgender touch for thinking about what trans embodiment does to the transitivity of touch. A grammatically incorrect (and perhaps controversial) formulation that makes of transgender a verb, to transgender touch intends to foreground the performative force that trans touch holds, in its capacity to do and its ability to undo, notions of gender and sexuality as.

Reverse Cowgirl  /

Wark McKenzie.South Padadena, CA: Semiotext(e), 2020 - 199 p.
uitgave: South Padadena, CA: Semiotext(e), 2020 - 199 p.

samenvatting: McKenzie Wark invents a new genre for another gender: not a memoir but an auto-ethnography of the opacity of the self. Another genre for another gender. What if you were trans and didn't know it? What if there were some hole in your life and you didn't even know it was there? What if you went through life not knowing why you only felt at home in your body at peak moments of drugs and sex? What if you expended your days avoiding an absence, a hole in being? Reverse Cowgirl is not exactly a memoir. The author doesn't, in the end, have any answers as to who she really is or was, although maybe she figures out what she could become. Traveling from Sydney in the 1980s to New York today, Reverse Cowgirl is a comedy of errors, chronicling the author's failed attempts at being gay and at being straight across the shifting political and media landscapes of the late twentieth century. Finding that the established narratives of being transgender don't seem to apply to her, Wark borrows from the genres of autofiction, fictocriticism, and new narrative to create a writing practice that can discover the form of a life outside existing accounts of trans experience: an auto-ethnography of the opacity of the self.

Jan Morris: Life from both sides : A biography  /

samenvatting: The first ever biography of a world famous author and transgender pioneer. When Jan Morris passed away in 2020, she was considered one of Britain's best-loved writers. The author of Venice, Pax Britannica, Conundrum, and more than fifty other books, her work was known for its observational genius, lyricism, and humor, and had earned her a passionate readership around the world. Morris's life was no less fascinating than her oeuvre. Born James Humphry Morris in 1926, a childhood spent amidst Oxford's Gothic beauty and military service in Italy and the Middle East were followed by a career as an internationally feted foreign correspondent. From being the only journalist to join the first ascent of Mount Everest in 1953 to covering the trial of Adolf Eichmann, Morris's reportage spanned many of the twentieth century's defining moments. However, public success masked a private dilemma that was only resolved when she transitioned genders in the late 1960s, becoming renowned as a transgender pioneer. She went on to live happily with her wife Elizabeth in Wales for another five decades, and never stopped writing and publishing. Here, for the first time, the many strands of Morris's rich life are brought together, portraying a person of extraordinary talent, curiosity, and joie de vivre.
